Author's Note Julia Morgan was born in San Francisco on January 20, 1872. After earning an undergraduate degree in civil engineering, Morgan traveled to Paris to study architecture at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Though she arrived in Paris to begin her studies in 1896, Morgan was refused admission for two years because the Ecole had never conceived of allowing women to study at the institution. In 1919 she was hired by William Randolph Hearst to design a main building and guest houses for his ranch, San Simeon, in central California. By that time, Julia Morgan had been practicing nearly twenty years and had at least 450 buildings to her credit. She spent over 40 years continuing her private practice and her work for Hearst, which came to be called "The Hearst Castle."
