Grippees
The Grippees were an elegant and inexpensive solution to the problem of sensing participants' hands in virtual space, sufficient to allow simulated grasping of the Voiceholders. The Banff Centre had only one (expensive) DataGlove, and we strongly wanted to allow participants to use all four hands, believing that this would greatly affect how they moved and acted with their bodies in space. Interval researcher Steve Saunders came up with a solution - he used a thermal setting plastic strip, bent to fit inside the curve of the thumb and forefinger, with a sliding variable resistor - the degree of resistance indicated the amount of closure of the hand. Combined with a Polhemus tracker on the wrist, this gave us what we needed.
