Intellectual Property

• Xerox PARC
  I was the principal inventor of the Xerox DataGlyph^TM two dimensional bar-code technology. I hold the basic patent, and share two subsidiary patents. This technology actually made it out the door from Xerox PARC - and can be licensed today. I worked closely with patent attorneys, and analyzed marketing opportunities for Xerox. I also invented the world's first perceptually correct color scanner technology, and patented an amorphous silicon chip design for implementing it.
• Interval Research Corporation
  My work on "affective computing" was an early effort in the field, well before the Sony Aibo robotic dog, and I hold two basic patents in the area of emotional user interfaces that came out of the work I lead on the building of an emotional robot. I also had a patent issue on a user interface for rapidly browsing large amounts of video based on MPEG motion vectors presented as patterns... which has applications ranging from set top boxes to surveillance systems.
• Sun Labs
  At Sun Labs I worked on the emerging technologies of RFID and sensor networks, and filed six patents. I also worked with the DRM strategy committee, developing a structural analysis of DRM markets that created new opportunities for Sun in medical informatics, identity management, and more. I also worked with field representatives and sales reps to marry Sun's technologies to customer needs.
  

Technology Transfer

• Schlumberger
  My first experience with invention and technology transfer was at Schlumberger Benson, where I was the laison to Schlumberger Palo Alto Research - and worked on image processing tech transfer from research to products that went out the door.
• Xerox PARC
  At PARC I worked as part of a team to transfer Smalltalk into a commercial company - ParcPlace Systems - through the commercial launch and spinout of Smalltalk. I stayed at PARC, and worked on the development and transfer of digital color reproduction technology to manufacturing units . I also invented a novel two-dimensional bar-code - DataGlyph^TM - and helped with its intitial transfer as a commericial product.
• Interval Research
  At Interval I helped with the background research and the design of the girl-centric computer games that were spun out of Interval as Purple Moon, later acquired by Mattel. I worked on several projects that I tried to get out the door into products... but Interval was a very hard place to do that due to its peculiar political relationship with its sister companies.
• AT&T Labs
  At AT&T I identified technologies that were ready in the Labs to be moved out into consumer products - namely voice recognition and voice synthesis placed into a wearable computer or PDA. The Kava Project, for which I was the system architect, was a platform that aimed to take these large system applications and move them into new markets. I worked with AT&T Labs on the East Coast to find and port these apps, and with AT&T Legal to realize Open Source license terms for the Kava platform - a razor handle and razor blade approach. I found external customers at AT&T Wireless and Casio for our work on Kava and the Fair Witness wearable escrow video device.
• Sun Labs
  At Sun I worked with an external contractor to prototype one of my inventions (patent pending) for the U.S. Navy SPAWAR. I also wiith with product groups to field test Sun's sensor network technology (Sun SPOT) with major Sun customers, and with a graduate media design program at the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California.
• NASA
  At the NASA Ames Research Center I worked to match up the intents of various NASA teams with capabilities from industry. In June 0f 2007 this resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding between Sun Microsystems and NASA for collaborative research and development in supercomputing, Open Source, wireless sensor networks, and more.
  

Research to Product

• Technology survey
  I follow many different fields, ranging from nano-technology through computer design to user experience and interface design. I'm familiar with space science technology, wearable computing, telecommunications, theoretical evolutionary biology, and anthropology. I enjoy putting things together from wildly disparate fields, and getting a new system.
• Marketing survey and user studies
  I've worked with major market research firms, and directed user studies and focus groups for electronic devices, electronic games, and services.
• Intellectual property
  Patents are good poker chips in business negotiations. I have worked closely with patent attorneys and have pushed a number of patents all the way through the process, including drafts, amendments, and improvement patents. I know how to interpret "novel to one skilled in the art" - and I can look at an organization's existing technology and find patentable ways to improve it.
  
• Strategy, tactics, and infrastructure
  I have learned to do top-down decisions on "what to do next". I base this on starting with Grand Strategy, then Strategies that support the Grand Strategy, and then the small of Tactics that implement the Strategies. A heuristic in support of this is to look at emerging infrastructures that you can assume - i.e., 802.11b or GPRS. Most workers start from a wizzy technology, and then try to find a way to use it... I work from finding goals, and then find strategies and tactics to achieve them.
