Hoodoos are spires of eroded earth, usually
found along a steep embankment in river valleys
and canyons. A spectacular stand of several
such is found just outside of
town of Banff, high above the Bow River, which we selected
it as a place to
model for one of our
three Worlds, thinking that the spires looked like ancient
sleeping giants - perhaps women - who might
awaken and snare unwary travelers. We even
thought, for a while, of morphing faces on
to the spires, to increase that impression
- maybe faces of old women that appeared
only when you looked obliquely, and faded
when you looked directly at the Hoodoos.
We visited other Hoodoos around the town
of Banff, including one huge
"Mother of all Hoodoos" deep in a hidden canyon, where we found
ancient Indian petroglyphs and evidence of
modern pagan rituals.
Other
story seeds for the Hoodoos World evolved as we worked with members of the
Precipice Theatre group at the Hoodoos.
In the Hoodoos World, there were several
environmental sounds, spatialized using the
Convolvotrons: sounds of crows flying through the air,
there was a
wind sound that wandered
about the Magic Circle within a distance of ten to two hundred
meters; there was
also a distant sound of running water, which
a participant could close their eyes
and point to - and then open their eyes and
find themselves pointing accurately at
the Bow River in the valley below the earthern
spires of the Hoodoos World... as you can
